Unless you have very long interviews, it is very difficult to have a candidate write a substantial amount of code.  I think an interview can reliably deal with this by showing the interviewee a code sample and asking them about it.

It has been over a month since the May 6^th New York Stock Exchange flash crash, where the stock market crashed, but only for a brief moment.  There is still no evidence that the flash crash was caused by a computer glitch, as much of the press has reported.  I read many of the reports stating the reason for the flash crash was a software glitch or bug.  As a software developer, I was curious how such a catastrophic bug could have happened.  When digging through the details of those reports, there was never any bug described.  As you can imagine, I was pretty steamed about software being blamed for a problem that was not caused by software.
